support association Lights e.V.

Our team at the German support association Lights e.V. consists of dedicated young adults between the ages of 21 and 29.

Many of us have spent several weeks or months in Uganda ourselves, living there and actively contributing to social projects. During this time, we had the opportunity to get to know the project founders and the Lights Masaka Foundation—forming friendships, experiences, and connections that continue to shape us today.

Today, as a volunteer team at Lights e.V. in Germany, we work continuously to support the Ugandan foundation in the long term and help expand its work. Several of our members regularly return to Uganda to maintain friendships and keep the close exchange between the Ugandan and German teams alive.

our mission board

As Lights e.V., we are driven by the motivation to contribute to greater social justice in the world. As a support association, we see it as our responsibility to raise funds for the LIGHTS MASAKA FOUNDATION. We view this as an opportunity to redistribute financial resources in favor of children and young people whose rights must be upheld. Our vision is to provide the project leaders on the ground with the financial means and institutional framework necessary to realize children's rights for the children and young people in their care. Partnership, friendly communication, and personal contact with the Ugandan staff are at the heart of our collaboration. Together, we follow the strategy of growing the project through targeted, sustainable investments so that more and more children and young people can be reached. As a German–Ugandan team, we make investments that can finance themselves. In doing so, we aim to strengthen the project’s independence. Any profits flow directly into the implementation of children’s rights. As Lights e.V., we base our work on the following values and principles: We strive to act transparently toward donors, project leaders, and the children and young people involved—both within the project and on the streets. At the same time, protecting the personal data of minors, including their image rights, is of utmost importance to us. We recognize that these two values can stand in tension with one another, and we take this into careful consideration. We create time and space for critical reflection. Especially when making decisions, we remain mindful of our own and societal forms of racism, the risk of “white saviorism,” colonial continuities in North–South cooperation, gender roles, and animal welfare.
